Hello everybody! Right behind me is Buckingham Palace but that's not today's subject. If you have passed through here already probably you have seen this column and if you have something curious inside you you have probably asked yourself: "Who is that"? So let's find out. Well lets assume you have read the title of the video which means you already know that on top of that column is Frederick the 1st Duke of York. There is a weird connection between him, his statue and beer but I'll tell you a bit later about that.
Now lets talk a little bit about his life. He was famous mostly for two things: the love of the army and the love of gambling. Lets start with the army. He was a commander-in-chief during the Napoleonic wars but he wasn't a very good leader. He wasn't the type of a person that will inspire the soldiers or he wasn't even a tactical genius but he acknowledged the importance of the army. So he did lots of reform in the structure, in the administration and in the way they recruit for which he is credited as, I quote, "The man who has done the most for the army than anybody else in the whole history of the army. Pretty nice! Now lets go to the gambling. He wasn't very good in that as well. When he died he had more than 2 million pounds in debt. Converted in today's money that's A LOT! And when he died his statue is halfway through to be completed. During those days all these monuments and statues were built by the family of the person or by the people themself and with all these debts nobody wanted to finish the statute but here comes the army. This brings us to the fact I told you about at the beginning. The army got together and raised money for the statue. "Why" you may ask. He wasn't a tactical genius! Well, he introduced to the army something called "beer money". This is a special little bit in your payslip every week that you can spend on beer. So the army got together and said: "Alright chumps! If we all give up one day's pay we can afford to build that column". That's what they did. So, next time... In a weird, weird way you can say that this monument is built by the love of beer. At least I think of that. So next time when you pass to Buckingham Palace have a look at that column, take a picture of it and it and think of it "Hey! Lets have a beer after our tour". Thank very much for watching. Please subscribe to the channel and I will see you next time.
